Tucked away from the well-trodden trails of Gulmarg and Pahalgam, Gurez and Lolab remain among the last untouched corners of Kashmir. Gurez Valley, cradled along the banks of the roaring Kishanganga River and guarded by the towering Habba Khatoon Peak, sits just a few kilometers from the Line of Control, home to the ancient Dard-Shin tribe whose customs and wooden villages have survived centuries virtually unchanged. Crossing the dramatic Razdan Pass to reach it is a journey in itself — pine forests giving way to alpine meadows and snow-fed streams. To the west lies Lolab Valley, poetically known as Wadi-e- Lolab, the "Valley of Love and Beauty." An oval bowl of walnut and apple orchards, dense conifer forests, and quiet villages like Sogam and Kalaroos, Lolab offers a gentler, greener contrast to Gurez's rugged grandeur — along with the mystery of the centuries-old Kalaroos Caves and the sacred Lavnag Spring. Bookending the offbeat trail is Srinagar itself — the summer capital, with its floating gardens, Mughal-era terraces, and Dal Lake shimmering under the Zabarwan hills.
